What You Need to Know (from the filmmaker):
Developed with the full blessing of a senior member of the Muslim Council, Living With The Infidels centres around a bumbling, Bradford-based terror cell. Initially set on a path to martyr-dom, Yorkshire's jihadi warriors discover the West isn't as bad as it seems. Tempted by the likes of Man U, cable TV and ample Abi upstairs, what's a man to do? Will they find Paradise in the arms of seventy-two virgins, or is Shangri-La closer to home, propped up at the bar in The Dog and Duck?
What You Expect:
Brilliantly creative and fresh comedy.
What [Living With the Infidels] Delivers:
5 Bullets to the Brain (out of five) for Mind Blowin’ AWE-someness!
I have been a fan of Britcoms for a long time. They set the bar for others to follow. For instance, Monty Python, The Young Ones, Father Ted, Red Dwarf, The Office, and many others. When I heard the title, Living with the Infidels, and read that it was set in Britain, I couldn’t wait to watch it. I was not disappointed.
Aasaf Ainapore and Kira-Anne Pelican have created something so ballsy that, love or hate it, you can’t deny that they’re going to have a great future, especially in this “reboot” culture the enter-tainment industry is floundering in.
Not only is the writing excellent, but the cast is believable and, despite the fact they’re set on the path of martyrdom, you can associate with them. The young characters are every bit a part of the infidel society they hate, using iPods, wearing tee-shirts that read “I’m not a Geek. I’m a Level 9 Warlord,” and, most telling, are complete pre-madonnas when it comes to recording their suicide message video. And then there’s Ample Abi, the bombshell blonde upstairs. Likewise, the pro-duction value is great. It looks, sounds and is edited very nicely. It’s just an all around solid show.
The only problem is it’s only 5 episodes. Leave ‘em wanting more, right?
The Last Word If you are looking for something new, and want to watch someone who’ll defi-nitely be going places, definitely give this show a go.
